COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa. (KMTV) — Three males attempted to steal a car out of a garage early this morning.

Just after 4 a.m., residents at 2902 Avenue K were woken up by the sound of someone starting a car in a garage.

"Eric Martinez (19 yrs old) and Carmen Hernandez (20 yrs old) exited to the house to investigate and observed 3 males near their garage. These three males then took off running eastbound through the alley. Carmen Hernandez was running after the males when one of them fired multiple rounds at her from a handgun. Hernandez was hit by the gunfire one time, in the lower leg," police say.

The suspects were unable to get the garage door open enough to successfully drive the car out of the garage. Responding officers were unable to locate any of the suspects in the area. Hernandez was taken by ambulance to Jennie Edmunson Hospital for treatment and her injuries are not life-threatening.
