OMAHA, Neb. (KMTV) — Overnight, a Bellevue man was arrested following a pursuit by the Nebraska State Patrol (NSP).

Just before 3 a.m., NSP says a trooper saw a driver run a stop sign near 69th and Grant Streets. The trooper initiated a stop but the driver fled westward towards 72nd Street they say.

From there, the driver made it onto I-80 eastbound and struck another vehicle. The driver of the vehicle hit was not injured and the chase continued east.

They say the driver swerved towards another trooper, near the 42nd Street exit, who was deploying a stop strip. Luckily the trooper was able to avoid being hit by running into the ditch and the driver then struck another trooper's cruiser.

Another trooper then "successfully performed a tactical vehicle intervention to bring the suspect vehicle to a stop."

As the troopers approached 54-year-old Jack Costello's vehicle, they say he failed to comply with verbal commands but was ultimately taken into custody.

Costello was arrested for:

  • Felony flight to avoid arrest
  • Willful reckless driving
  • Assault on an officer
  • Attempted assault on an officer with a motor vehicle
  • Possession of methamphetamine
  • Obstructing a peace officer
  • Resisting arrest
  • Driving under the influence of drugs
  • Driving under suspension
  • Leaving the scene of an accident
  • An outstanding warrant

Costello was lodged at the Douglas County Corrections building and no troopers were harmed during the incident.
