24- year-old Armond Floyd remains in the Sarpy County Jail, charged with child abuse resulting in death.
A judge set his bond at two and a half million dollars.
Floyd gave KMTV’s Shawnte Passmore an exclusive jailhouse interview to give his side of what exactly happened inside a Bellevue apartment on Sunday.
Friday would have been Imani Edwards' 2nd birthday.
Last Sunday, Floyd was watching the little girl, but something happened leading to her death.
Floyd is asking for the world to listen.
“ I just wish i could take it back. Rewind everything. She'd still be here,” he said.
As he sits behind bars, Floyd says memories of Imani Edwards haunt him.
“It was a typical day. I just chalked up to me just being a bad parent,” he said.
Even thought he was not his biological daughter, Floyd says he cared for his girlfriend's daughter as his own.
Last Sunday, he watched the one-year-old at their Bellevue apartment.
While the mother worked, the toddler in the midst of potty-training, had an accident.
“I smacked her hand," Floyd said.
“So she started freaking out so she started screaming so i put my hand over her mouth because we have neighbors in the apartment. But not like to suffocate her, but to muffle it so it wouldn't be so loud.”
To calm her down, Floyd told KMTV that he brought her to the bedroom.
Floyd said the panic set in and he accidentally swings the child and her head hitting the doorway.
Then she begins to vomit.
“I was freaking out,” he said. “ I didn't know what to do.”
He said he ran into the bathtub to clean her up and in the chaos, the couple's 7 month-old starts crying.
“So I left her and i go check on my son,” Floyd said.
“ I didn't realize how long i was gone, when i came back she was unconscious in the tub. When I took her out of the tub, she took a deep breath. So i thought she was ok,” he added.
But then, she wasn't.
“So , I shook her - i said, 'Imani wake up,’” he said.
That’s when Floyd called 911.
On Tuesday, Imani died at Children's Hospital.
Now, Floyd faces child abuse resulting in death charges and sits in jail with a $2.5 million bond.
More than ever, he's hoping another compelling narrative will tell his innocence.
“I'm hoping the autopsy shows that i didn't do it. That would make me feel even worse. If i did cause it,” Floyd said.
Not only is Floyd charged in this case, but he's also facing charges related to a domestic violence dispute with the child's mother.
