Bennington Police Chief Les Johnson died unexpectedly Tuesday night, according to a release from the mayor's office.
Johnson began with the Bennington Police Department as a part-time officer in 1992 and has been the Chief since 2004.
The flags in Bennington will be at half-staff to honor him.
Johnson was recovering from a fall he had while working on his home in June, he was 51-years-old.
