Sen. Anna Wishart of Lincoln proposed LB 893 which would ban the sale of non-rescue cats and dogs in retail pet stores.
The bill would also mandate each pet store to maintain records to document source of each pet animal for the duration of each animal's housing for at least one year after the date of sale to a customer.
The stores would also have to post in a conspicuous location on the cage or enclosure of each pet animal, a sign listing the name of the animal control facility, animal shelter, or animal rescue from which the animal was obtained.
The American Kennel Association is against this bill saying it will dramatically reduce the average person's access and ability to choose a pet with the predictable type.
They also said it does not require shelters or rescues to supply pet stores with dogs to sell. A lack of supply will prove economically disastrous for the businesses and the people who are employed by them.
3 News Now did reach out to Tully's Kennels which said this bill will kill his business. Pets R' Us also said this will would damage its business.
