The Omaha Naming Committee has recommended a name for the new lake recreational area near 168th and Fort streets.
After reviewing more than 200 names suggested by Omaha-area residents, the committee is suggesting the lake and park be named Flanagan Lake in honor of the founder of Boys Town, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. The name received 28 nominations.
Other top name recommendations from the public included 22 nominations to name it after Kerrie Orozco; 12 nominations for Andrea Kruger; six (including the NRD) for Susan La Flesche Picotte Park; four each for Dr. Don Benning, Bob Gibson, and Jean Stothert; and three each for Johnny Rosenblatt, Jesse Lowe, and the Buffett Family.
The naming committee's vote must be approved by the Omaha City Council and the Parks and Recreation Board.
The park is expected to open next year.
