County attorney will discuss in-custody death

Posted

OMAHA, Neb. (KMTV) - The Douglas County Attorney's Office is expected to release its finding in regards to an in-custody death back in June.

Zachary Bearheels, 29, died after an encounter with Omaha police June 5th at the Bucky's gas station near 60th and  Center streets, according to investigators.

During the 10 a.m. Wednesday news conference, Don Kleine is expected to show dash cam video from a cruiser showing what happened during the nearly hour-long exchange that early morning.

It remains unclear whether Kleine will announce any criminal charges.

An internal police investigation reveals Ofc. Scotty Payne used his Taser 12 times while Ofc. Ryan McClarty punched Bearheels 15 times.

Autopsy results show the Oklahoma native died from a sudden death associated with excited delirium, physical struggle and restraint and the use of an officer's Taser.

Recently, the city let both officers off the force following Chief Todd Schmaderer's recommendation.
