OMAHA, Neb. (KMTV) — A Lincoln Police Department cruiser was struck by a man believed to have been driving drunk on Thursday night.

An officer was outside the vehicle, conducting a traffic stop in the area of 70th and Van Dorn Street, when the back of his cruiser was struck by another vehicle.

The driver allegedly was showing signs of impairment and failed a field sobriety test. According to the report, his blood-alcohol level was nearly three times the legal limit at .228.

Preston Tangeman, 22, was cited for DUI 1st offense, open alcohol container, no insurance, and negligent driving.

"It is very fortunate that the officer was not in the vehicle at the time of the accident as he would have been seriously injured," the department said in a press release. "The cruiser was totaled as the frame was crushed from rear to front."
