OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A methamphetamine trafficker who worked for a Mexican-based drug organization was sentenced Monday to 11 years in prison, the U.S. attorney’s office in Nebraska said.
Raymundo Hernandez-Rubio, 35, will be deported to Mexico after serving his prison term, U.S. Attorney Joe Kelly said in a news release. He was convicted of conspiracy to distribute and possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine.
Prosecutors say they identified Hernandez-Rubio when he delivered last year about $90,000 of suspected drug proceeds to an undercover agent of the Drug Enforcement Administration.
The investigation found that Hernandez-Rubio left Omaha, Nebraska, and traveled to Chicago, where he made made several stops before heading back to Omaha. A Nebraska State Patrol trooper stopped him on Dec. 7, 2019 and recovered about 15 pounds of methamphetamine hidden within a spare tire.
A search of his home later that day recovered drug ledgers, a handgun and more than $130,000 hidden under a bed in the master bedroom.
Prosecutors said a closer inspection of his ledgers showed he was responsible for handling hundreds of pounds of meth and thousands of dollars in drug proceeds for a Mexico-based drug trafficking organization.
