Fremont man arrested for injuring baby

Posted

A Fremont man was arrested after an 11-month-old baby ended up in the hospital.

18-year-old Alexander Martinez was arrested for two counts of felony child abuse and is being held on $750,00 bond.

Fremont Police said he allegedly injured his girlfriend's baby.

Court documents show the baby has a skull fracture, a brain injury, and a broken sternum.

“The child has injuries that are consistent with being shaken as well as being hit with blunt force trauma,” said Fremont Police Detective Aaron Howe.

Howe said doctors believe the baby received the skull fracture on October 28th and when taken to Fremont Health, doctors diagnosed a gland infection.

Then on November 2nd the baby was taken to the ER again, she was unconscious and had to be life-flighted to Children's Hospital in Omaha.

Court documents said Martinez’s hand had small inures around his knuckles.

“In their estimations, these injuries could not have been caused by simple accidents; these were indeed by inflicted injuries,” said Oliver Glass, the Dodge County District Attorney.

Glass said he charged two counts of child abuse because of the two injuries sustained.

“These are class two felonies, so we are looking at up to 100 years in prison if convicted on both,” he said.

Howe said Martinez was watching the baby by himself both times she was injured.

Investigators took several weeks to issue an arrest warrant because they wanted to make sure they had all the right information.

“That involves medial evidence, scientific evidence, interrogations of the suspects and all those things take time,” said Glass.

Both glass and Howe said the severity of this case is rare.

“We have our fair share of child abuse cases in Dodge County but this is one of the severest I have seen in quite a while,” said Glass.

Although the baby survived her injuries, she will have a long road ahead of her.

“Children are tough, they are very rugged, they come back from tremendous things, that is what I am hoping for but from what doctors have told me she will have sever deficiencies  from the brain injury,” said Howe.

Martinez’s attorney said they are going to investigate the medical records further and had no other comment.

Martinez will be back in court the beginning of January.
