Grand jury set for officer-involved shooting

A grand jury will convene in March to investigate a deadly shooting involving a Cass County deputy back in September.

The State Patrol says Deputy Tyler Rieff fired five shots at Austin Baier on September 21st following a traffic stop. Baier apparently charged at Rieff after he got out of his cruiser and ignored the Rieff's warnings. Investigators say Baier was not armed, but a knife was found on the dashboard of his car.

By state law, a grand jury must be called when a person dies while being apprehended or while in custody of a law enforcement officer or detention personnel.  The grand jury will meet March 22nd, 2017 to investigate whether or not a crime was committed or if charges should be filed in this case.
