A cold case murder is back in the spot light after an arrest last week. The man accused of murdering Joy Blanchard in 2007 appeared in court Monday.
Charles Simmer, 33, is charged with first degree murder.
Prosecutors say he stabbed his aunt, Joy Blanchard, to death on November 2, 2007. When investigators arrived they found two knives stuck in the back of Blanchard's neck.
She died of multiple stab wounds and blunt force trauma when she was hit with a spindle from the banister inside the home. Prosecutors say DNA testing matched simmer or a male family member that was located on the spindle and one of the knives.
"Oh yeah, it has been a long time coming. There's been a tremendous amount of work that's been put into this case by the Omaha Police Department, the cold case unit now, the reexamination, reevaluating, reassessing some evidence," Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine explained.
Simmer's bond is set at 10% of $10,000,000 at jail court Monday.
