OMAHA, Neb. (KMTV) - We've been taking precautions for months now when we head to the store.
Masks, hand sanitizer and Clorox wipes are usually found right inside the door, but now a local grocery chain is stepping up its approach to cleaning carts.
Hy-Vee has taken cart cleaning to the next level, relying on technology to do the job. They are the first grocery store chain to implement the fully automated sanitization system, company-wide.
Along with cleaning more than just the handle, it can clean multiple carts at once.
"The benefit of Sterile Cart is that it is like a mini car wash for grocery store carts,” said Hy-Vee store director Jim Ewoldt. “You push the cart in there, it sanitizes the cart from top to bottom in just a matter of seconds."
The sterile cart system uses hospital-grade disinfectant. The systems have been installed at almost all of the stores here in the metro area.
