Iowa lawmakers pass voter ID bill

Iowa lawmakers have passed a voter ID bill.

The bill heading to Governor Terry Branstad's desk would require people to show state-issued ID at the polls beginning in 2019. The state must provide ID to people who need it. The bill also cuts the number of days for early voting from 40 days to 29 days, and eliminates a straight party voting option. Branstad has indicated he will sign the bill.

Republicans say the bill will maintain voter integrity even though there's been no evidence of widespread voter fraud in Iowa. Democrats say it will suppress voter turnout.
