The ultimate betrayal, that's what prosecutors and the victim's family call the murder of Jessica Nelson in June 2015. Tuesday, the man who used a cell phone cord as a deadly weapon learned his sentence.
Matthew Kidder is sentenced to life in prison plus 20 years for the murder of Nelson in June 2015. The 28-year-old was found dead naked in her bathtub strangled to death at her home near 83rd & Miami St. He sexually assaulted nelson before killing her; his DNA was found under her fingernails.
Kidder was a family friend and even went to Nelson's funeral before being arrested.
A jury took just 41 minutes to find him guilty in September.
Nelson's family says they're satisfied with the punishment.
"If I had my choice I would just do it myself, end his life because he violently took my daughter's life. There's no place for that there's no reason for him to have done that," said Harry Nelson, Jessica’s father.
Kidder was defiant in court on Tuesday.
Douglas Co. District Court Judge Kimberly Pankonin said, “You are a very dangerous person who preys on women and commits very heinous crimes against them."
"Yeah right, (expletive),” Kidder responded.
Kidder previously served 4 years in prison for another sexual assault. He will get credit for 475 days served.
