Kinetic exhibit: Giant, moving wooden sculptures you have to see

“Kinetic," an exhibition of art and science exploring movement, is on display at KANEKO through Oct. 14. The exhibit includes a giant illuminated garden and 13 wooden sculptures created by Montana artist John Buck.

There are some that are so tall in Bow Truss Gallery, that the pieces had to be positioned between the 14 foot tall beams. This is the largest, most extensive collection of Buck's work. Buck handcarved the pieces from lightweight jelutong wood from Malaysia, from the big pieces to the gears that move each pieces. Each sculpture takes about a year to complete.

Because the sculptures are so delicate, the KANEKO doesn't run them all the time. Staff offers guided tours to see all of the pieces moving at once. They can be made my appointment, or are regularly on Tuesdays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., Fridays from Noon to 1 p.m., or Saturdays: 11 a.m. to noon.
