Lincoln man dead, woman in critical condition after shooting

LINCOLN, Neb. (KMTV) — The death of a 58-year-old male and critical injury of a 54-year-old female is being investigated by Lincoln Police.

Lincoln Police Officers and Lincoln Fire and Rescue responded to the 2300 block of Southwest 18th St to help a woman with a head injury. The female who called police ushered two officers into the home.

Upon entry, the 58-year-old male, identified as Eric Garten, fired a single shot from a handgun, taking his own life. The 54-year-old woman, identified as Rachel Garten, had a gunshot wound to her head.

Rachel was transported to a local hospital where she is currently in critical condition.

No shots were fired by Lincoln Police.

The investigation is in the preliminary stages by Lincoln PD's Criminal Investigation Unit and Crime Scene Technicians.

There is no ongoing threat to the safety of the public. Lincoln PD will provide additional details during the morning press briefing on Monday.
