Lincoln native killed in warehouse fire

<p>At least&nbsp;<a href="http://www.foxnews.com/us/2016/12/03/casualties-reported-in-three-alarm-oakland-building-fire.html" target="_blank">nine people</a>&nbsp;have died and dozens more are missing after a warehouse fire in Oakland, California.</p><p>Fire officials say between 50 and 100 people were having a party inside the building when it caught fire late Friday night.&nbsp;<a href="http://abc7news.com/news/at-least-9-dead-25-unaccounted-for-in-oakland-fire/1637912/" target="_blank">Local media report</a>&nbsp;the space is home to over a dozen people who use it as an artists&#39; collective.</p><p>The county&#39;s sheriffs office&nbsp;<a href="http://www.ktvu.com/news/221282720-story" target="_blank">told KTVU</a>&nbsp;that the coroner is preparing for the possibility of receiving 40 or more bodies. That could make it the deadliest structure fire in the history of Oakland.</p><p>Firefighters say the building had no sprinkler system and believe the smoke detectors might not have activated during the fire.</p><p>And that&#39;s not uncommon. The&nbsp;<a href="http://www.nfpa.org/~/media/files/news-and-research/resources/fire-investigations/case_study_nightclub_fires.pdf?la=en" target="_blank">National Fire Protection Association</a>&nbsp;says buildings used for entertainment purposes often have inadequate fire prevention systems or poor escape routes.</p><p>That trend goes all the way back to at least the 1800s when theaters were a common location for gatherings.</p><p>Major venue fires happen every few years worldwide. Last year, a nightclub fire killed more than 64 in Romania. Over 200 people died more than three years before that when fireworks sparked a blaze at a concert in Brazil.</p><p>But it&#39;s been 13 years since the U.S. had a major fire like this. The last one happened in 2003, when a fire at a Rhode Island nightclub killed&nbsp;<a href="http://www.foxnews.com/us/2013/02/20/decade-later-rhode-island-nightclub-disaster-still-haunts.html" target="_blank">100 people</a>.</p><p>In that fire, pyrotechnics ignited soundproofing foam, which then spread quickly because the building didn&#39;t have a sprinkler system.
