The United States Navy commissioned the USS Omaha, a littoral combat ship, or LCS, in San Diego on Saturday afternoon.
Philanthropist Susie Buffet, the ship's sponsor, gave the order at the commissioning ceremony.
"I'm lucky to have enjoyed a lo of really great days in my life, but nothing compares to this. Wow," Buffett said. "On behalf of the people back home in Omaha, and throughout Nebraska, I can tell you how filled with joy we all are by this ship, and by your service."
Former Nebraska governor and senator Bob Kerrey, wiho was a Navy SEAL, gave the principal address.
"There were skeptics, there were opponents, there were people who said it couldn't get done," Kerrey said. "All the technology in this ship didn't exist when the project began."
