Longtime Boys Town leader Peter passes away

OMAHA, Neb. (KMTV) - A longtime leader at Boys Town has passed away.

Rev. Val Peter died early Tuesday. He was 85 years old.

Peter was the fourth Executive Director of Boys Town, a role he held from 1985-2005.

According to the Boys Town National Alumni Association, "Under his direction, Boys Town grew to provide direct care, including hospital treatment, to more than 43,000 children each year. A million more were helped each year through outreach and training programs."

Peter retired as Executive Director of Boys Town in 2005. He later served as Executive Director Emeritus and Senior Associate Pastor at the Immaculate Conception Dowd Memorial Chapel, according to the Boys Town National Alumni Association.

The Peter family issued the following statement Saturday, July 4:

Out of an abundance of caution amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the decision has been made that the Monday, July 6 rosary and the Tuesday, July 7 funeral for Father Val will be open only to immediate family, priests, and religious.

The viewing will take place from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, July 6 at Heafey Hoffmann Dworak Cutler Mortuary (78th and West Center Rd).

The viewing will be open to all friends and family of Father Val.
