OMAHA, Neb. (KMTV) — The Omaha Police Department arrested a suspect near Turner Park for allegedly shooting a man during a custody exchange.
On Monday, just before 4 p.m., police responded to the area of Turner Boulevard and Mason Street for a shooting report. There, they located 23-year-old Austin Carter suffering a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.
During their investigation, police learned the suspect's vehicle was involved in a wreck about a block north of where Carter was found at the intersection of Leavenworth and Turner Boulevard.
Police say the occupants of the vehicle included 22-year-old Megan Martin, her two young children and 34-year-old Diego Vazquez. Following the wreck, police say Vazquez fled the scene on foot but was located near 35th and Jackson Street and taken into custody.
Police say they were able to determine that Martin and Carter have children together and were meeting for a custody exchange. They also determined "that the involved parties anticipated a conflict between Carter and Vazquez."
Vazquez was booked at Douglas County Corrections for:
- 2nd-Degree Assault
- Use of a Weapon to Commit a Felony
- Possession of a Weapon by a Prohibited Person
- Two counts of Child Abuse
- Obstructing a Police Officer
The mother of the children, Megan Martin was booked for two counts of child abuse and the children were placed in protective custody.
