NANCE COUNTY, Neb. (KMTV) — First responders located the body of Brett Swantek, a Genoa volunteer firefighter Tuesday afternoon on the Loup River, according to the Nance County Sheriff's office.

Swantek had been missing since May 25th. He was last seen in a kayak near the Loup Public Power District Headworks Park.

According to witnesses, Swantek's kayak may have overturned while attempting to go over the diversion dam in the area.

Several people on scene tried to rescue him, but were unable to due to dangerous river conditions.

Later, rescue crews asked people on social media to join a search for him along the riverbanks.

The Nance County Sheriff's office along with fire and rescue personnel from Genoa, Monroe and Schuyler assisted in the recovery of his body.
