LINCOLN, Neb. (KMTV) — A new census office will be opening in Lincoln ahead of the 2020 Census. The Nebraska Area Census Office will serve as the operational hub for the mandated census. A press conference will be held to introduce the office on Tuesday afternoon.

The 2020 Census has three ways to respond. You can submit by phone or mail, and for the first time ever, there will be an online option.

The online option will make early self-response to the census easier and more efficient for most Nebraska residents. Census data is responsible for the distribution of more than $600 billion in federal funds and grants annually, with the money spent on schools, hospitals, roads, and other programs vital to all Nebraskans.

The U.S. Census Bureau is hiring thousands of people for temporary positions to staff the office and field operations in Nebraska.

Governor Pete Ricketts will speak at the press conference, which begins at 2:00 at the Barbara Weitz Community Engagement Center on UNO's campus.
