On Thursday, the Omaha Public Power District sent out a warning about scammers who were pretending to be its employees and demanding payments for meter replacements. On Friday, the Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) said scammers are doing the same to their customers.
NPPD says customers are reporting calls from scammers who are threatening to disconnect power if they do not make an immediate payment over the phone.
The scammers tell customers to submit payment via methods "such as a wire transfer, gift cards or pre-paid debit cards such as a Green Dot card."
NPPD says it does not call customers asking for credit card numbers or payments via pre-paid cards and anyone receiving such calls should hang up and report the call to them by calling 1-877-ASK-NPPD.
