OMAHA, Neb. (KMTV) — The Nebraska State Patrol (NSP) says a trooper was struck by a vehicle on the I-80 and I-680 junction and wants to remind drivers what precautions they should take when slick conditions are present. The situation could have been much worse if the trooper hadn't been quick on his feet.

They say the incident occurred on Monday just before midnight, when a trooper was assisting a motorist. As the trooper gave aid, a Chrysler Sebring lost control, careening towards the trooper and the other vehicle. The trooper was able to avoid being hit head on by jumping onto the Sebring which then crashed into the vehicle he was helping with. After the vehicle came to rest, the trooper continued to lend aid at the scene and was eventually taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

“We are thankful our trooper was not seriously injured. This incident could have been much worse for all involved,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “As we move into the winter driving season, we urge drivers to be prepared for the conditions.”

NSP offered these tips for winter driving conditions:

  • Slow down. Never drive faster than conditions allow
  • Turn off cruise control in wet or snowy conditions
  • Move over when you see emergency vehicles or tow operators working
  • Know before you go. Check Nebraska 511 for the latest road conditions
  • Give yourself extra time to reach your destination
  • Have a winter survival kit in your vehicle
  • Always wear your seat belt and obey traffic safety laws.
