The Women’s Fund of Omaha provides resources to girls and women throughout the metro. Organizers say Olympic gold medalist Aly Raisman is a leader on and off the floor, which is why they chose her to highlight this year’s annual celebration, Lead the Change.
The Women’s Fund works to identify challenges girls and women face by providing millions of dollars in grant money for local nonprofits. It’s the only foundation that provides grants exclusively to programs for women and girls.
The Women’s Fund also researches issues including sexual education and health services, sex trafficking and domestic violence.
Communications director Jill Heggen says they chose Raisman as this year’s speaker because of the impact she’s made since speaking out against sexual assault, considering the recent scandal that rocked women’s gymnastics, and shared her experiences.
“She came out as a survivor of sexual abuse but continues to use her platform and her voice to hold those at the top accountable,” said Heggen.“She’s using her voice and we’re so impressed with her,” Heggen said.
Heggen says Raisman also uses her platform to promote positive body image by encoring girls to be comfortable, and confident, in their own skin.
The Women’s Fund will recognize local nonprofits at the luncheon, who’ll be awarded grants to support programs that make positive impacts on girls and women.
