Kiewit Corp. announced plans yesterday to build a new headquarters across the street from it's Kiewit University at 14th & Mike Fahey streets.

Kiewit's new headquarters will take up the entire block between Cuming and Mike Fahey streets from 15-16. They say the new headquarters will encourage more development and re-affirms their commitment to Omaha.

Sean Johnson, Senior Director of Business Development with the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce, says the announcement will continue to push momentum.

"We have continued to field interest from a variety of users — office, retail, restaurant, hotel, etc. — so we're excited about what it's going to do for that region and that area of downtown specifically," Johnson explained.

Kiewit University trains and develops 3,000 employees a year from across the country.

The Session Room, currently at 15th & Mike Fahey streets, will have to close on June 15 to make room for the new Kiewit headquarters. They're looking for new space in the area to continue serving NoDo.

"As any small-business owner, it was a little heart-wrenching to us in the beginning," said Cindy Schnittgrund, who owns The Session Room with her husband. "We feel really good about ourselves having made it through a couple of years with nothing down here, and now to see all that growth happen so quickly."

It's unclear what will happen to Kiewit's old headquarters at 35th & Farnam streets.
