OMAHA, Neb. (KMTV) — An Omaha police officer who took center stage during last year's protests will get a special honor this week for helping bring the community together.

“The large number of individuals that marched down Dodge Street, that's history...that's history ya’ll,” said officer Sherie Thomas. “Do you hear me, that's history?"

That’s what Thomas told a crowd at Memorial Park last June. Her speech included an emotional statement, telling those on hand that police are listening and willing to work with the community to improve things.

On Friday, she will be named Omaha’s Living the Dream winner at the city and county’s Martin Luther King Jr. celebration.

This year's event will be held virtually.
