OPPD: More customer reports of scam calls

OMAHA, Neb. (KMTV) — The Omaha Public Power District (OPPD) is reporting a scam affecting customers after 30 reports so far on Friday.

OPPD says scammers are calling customers, taking advantage of those who may be feeling vulnerable due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and may be doing so with an 810 area code. Some are even spoofing numbers from the Nebraska Public Power District while claiming to be OPPD representatives.

The callers are asking customers to use a cash app to settle bills and threaten a disconnection if they don't pay.

The company's call center representatives would never cold-call a customer demanding immediate payment and OPPD says you should never give out personal or financial information to an unsolicited caller. If customers were overdue on their bills to the point where service could be disconnected, they would receive written notice first.

Customers who have questions about their bill status or in need of financial assistance can call 402-536-4131 in the Omaha area or 877-536-4131 outside of the area.
