OMAHA, Neb. (KMTV) - The Omaha Public Power District is reporting an uptick in scam calls on Wednesday.
The utility company says they received around 100 reports by early Wednesday afternoon.
OPPD says callers pose as utility workers trying to convince customers they owe money and threaten to disconnect services if they don't pay. Scammers will often use spoofing technology to make it seem like the number is an official OPPD line.
Scammers will often request payment via a pre-paid debit or gift card to settle up, another warning sign of fraudulent activity.
OPPD urges consumers never to give personal information to anyone cold calling on the phone. They recommend taking note of the phone number and letting them know (402-536-4131 or 1-877-536-4131) so they can report it.
In 2019, OPPD received 1,336 reports of calls from scammers.
