NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KMTV) — Traffic stops in western Nebraska led to two arrests and over 110 pounds of marijuana seized by the Nebraska State Patrol.
Around 1:30 p.m. MT last Friday, a trooper noticed an eastbound 2018 Mercedes coupe speeding near Kimball. During the traffic stop, the trooper performed a search, discovering 35 pounds of marijuana in the trunk.
The driver was identified as Kiara Mendez, 24, of Beulaville, NC. Mendez was arrested for possession of marijuana -- more than one pound, possession with intent to deliver, and no drug tax stamp.
Mendez was lodged in Kimball County Jail, a press release from Nebraska State Patrol says.
Another seizure happened on I-80 near Sutherland around 10:00 p.m. CT. A trooper stopped an eastbound 2019 Ford station wagon for failure to stay in its lane.
During the traffic stop, a NSP K9 detected the presence of a controlled substance in the vehicle.
A trooper discovered approximately 80 pounds of marijuana. The driver, Stephen Demilta, 61, of Port Orange, Florida, was arrested for possession of marijuana -- more than one pound, possession with intent to deliver, and no drug tax stamp.
Demilta was held in the Lincoln County Jail.
