OMAHA, Neb. (KMTV) — If you're planning on doing some spring cleaning this weekend, don't forget to check medicine cabinets.

Saturday, April 27 is National Takeback Day, providing Americans an opportunity to prevent drug addiction and overdose death while ridding their homes of unused, expired and often dangerous medications.

This initiative addresses a continuing public safety and health issue by giving Americans a way to safely dispose of medications that sit in cabinets, which are prone to misuse and abuse.

Last autumn, Americans turned in nearly 460 tons of prescription drugs.

DEA and other agencies have taken in almost 11 million pounds of medication total over 16 previous Takeback events.
