DES MOINES, Iowa. (KMTV) — The director of RAGBRAI, a non-competitive bicycle ride organized by The Des Moines Register, announced Tuesday that he and his staff have resigned from the newspaper and are creating a new bicycle ride.

RAGBRAI, an acronym for Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa, has taken place across the state for 47 years. Bicyclists traditionally start in a town on Iowa's western border and travel for seven days to the state's eastern border, stopping in towns along the way.

Since 2003, TJ Juskiewicz has been the director of RAGBRAI. Tuesday, Juskiewicz announced he and the entire RAGBRAI staff have resigned, citing the Des Moines Register's controversy involving Carson King as the reason.

Juskiewicz explained the resignation on his Facebook Tuesday:

Juskiewicz says he and the staff that have resigned from RAGBRAI plan to host newly created Iowa's Ride, running from July 19-25, 2020 across northern Iowa.

The route will be announced in November.

All proceeds of the ride will go to Iowa charities, including the University of Iowa's Children's Hospital--the same hospital that Carson King raised $3,000,000 for.
