Rise in home security amid pandemic

OMAHA, Neb. (KMTV) — Porch pirates are always a concern, but that worry keeps growing with more of us shopping online due to the pandemic.

Thirty-eight percent of households have security systems, and that number is rising as more people are beefing up their security.

We've all seen the videos of porch pirates stealing packages, but now people are fighting back.

The wide variety of security systems and the variety in pricing are making the systems more affordable and popular.

From ADT to Ring, some people are self-installing, but many are playing it safe and relying on the professionals.

Family-owned Per Mar Security Services said they have seen an increase in both home security systems as well as business systems.

The systems have a multitude of features that can accommodate those that live alone as well as families, with kids or pets. The most popular are the systems with the cameras adding video surveillance.

Another important consideration is storage capabilities and how long you want to keep the video. Be mindful of who is monitoring your system. Some companies have third party companies monitoring.

Another great bonus to having a security system is you can get a discount on your home insurance from some companies.
