OMAHA, Neb. (KMTV) — Sarpy County is one step closer to getting a new jail.

The County Board unanimously approved plans to build a $65 million jail right next to the existing one. The current facility went over capacity shortly after it was built. The board plans to budget $6 million a year so it can pay for the new facility without a tax increase.

A vote on the new jail was held Tuesday. Our partners at the Omaha World-Herald say that designs on the jail should be complete by 2021. OWH spoke with Sarpy County Adminstrator Dan Hoins who said if everything goes according to plan, the jail should be built by the summer of 2023.
