SAUNDERS COUNTY, Neb. (KMTV) — An ice jam is building up on the Platte River near Fremont.
Residents in Saunders County are paying close attention to the river levels on the Platte. Over the weekend flooding in Dodge County caused some roads to flood and forced some people out of their homes and cabins.
"We just hope the weather cooperates and everything works out to our advantage," said Dave Langenfeld, a resident of the Woodcliff Lakes community on the Platte River. Langenfeld has lived in the community for 47 years and said he has been monitoring the ice jam since it started to grow on the Platte.
"Woodcliff side the stream is running but the concern is now the ice buildup the jam over on the Fremont side," Langenfeld said. "It is trouble in the making but we're on the positive side. We have good channels coming on this side of the lake so far. That could change in a hurry."
"We're hoping it cleans itself up in the next couple of days, the biggest thing would be the colder temperatures coming," said Wade McPherson, the chief at the Fremont Rural Fire Department. He said a complete ice jam will back up the water, forcing it in to low-lying areas near the river.
McPherson said residents who live near the water should pay attention to any advisories sent out. He added residents should evacuate if told to do so.
