Previous coverage:
Saunders County Sheriff Kevin Stukenholtz says the van involved in a deadly crash Monday evening was trying to make a U-turn when it was hit by an oncoming car, leaving one person dead and 11 others injured.
The crash happened around 8 p.m. on Highway 109, about a mile north of Colon.
Stukenholtz said the passenger van was heading north while towing a trailer when it tried to turn around after missing a turn.
Stukenholtz said the one person in the van got out to try to direct traffic while the van made its turn.
"It was a challenge to turn that large van, one-ton van pulling a trailer. So apparently they spent some time crossways in the road. I'm assuming that the head lights were shining down on the field as opposed to the highway. And then, you know, we've got kind of overcast conditions, made it difficult for the passenger vehicle to even see them," he said.
The driver of the other vehicle was killed and a passenger went to the hospital with serious injuries. Six passengers in the van were taken to the hospital with injuries ranging from serious to minor.
No names have been released yet.
