A small dog escaped through a hole under a wooden fence at a Waterloo pet motel earlier this week, and her owner has instead spent what should have been a relaxing week off trying to locate her pet.

"It's just a nightmare," said Sadie's owner, Teri Koller Kaeding, who filed an online report about her missing pet with the Nebraska Humane Society.

According to a Lost Pets of Omaha Facebook post, Sadie is a 5-pound, mainly white silky terrier/toy poodle mix with a bit of black on her back. Sadie has tags and was wearing a pink and purple rhinestone collar, the post states.

Kaeding said she boarded Sadie and another dog at Riverside Meadow Pet Motel near 234th and Dodge streets on Tuesday night ahead of a family vacation. The following night, they received a call from the pet motel informing them that Sadie had escaped.

"They told us they let her out into a gated yard, and she got out," Kaeding said.

The owner of the kennel told Kaeding they had let her dogs out because Sadie was very anxious, she said. They said turned their backs for a second, she said, and Sadie was gone.

"We decided to let the other dog stay one night," she said.

They hoped having the other dog there with Sadie's kennel and food dish might attract the little dog to come back, Kaeding said. But she didn’t, and when a relative came to pick up the other dog on Thursday, he told Kaeding the hole under the fence had been filled with cement blocks.

Kaeding said she has never boarded her pets before, and that she and her husband did their homework before selecting Riverside Meadow.

"They had a good rating," she said. That on top of a personal recommendation from an acquaintance made her family feel good about leaving their dogs there.

Riverside Meadow Pet Motel was closed at the time of this report, but 3 News Now newsroom staff left a message requesting comment.
