A state senator is proposing changes to make sure Omaha landlords are keeping properties at city code standards.
Nebraska State Senator Justin Wayne says in January he'll introduce legislation to address rental properties with unsafe and unsanitary living conditions.
In September, 500 refugees had to vacate the Yale Park Apartments when inspectors found 2-3,000 violations from life threatening gas leaks and electrical problems to pest infestations.
The proposed bill would require Omaha to establish a landlord registry, and inspect all residential rental properties.
Currently, Omaha inspectors only do code enforcement when they receive a complaint.
