The driver in a deadly single-vehicle crash in December will be charged with motor vehicle homicide, according to the Council Bluffs Police Department.
Investigators say the 16-year-old driver, who KMTV is not naming because she is charged in juvenile court, tested positive for marijuana in her system after a crash on Friday, Dec. 4 left one of her passengers, 16-year-old Haley Wright, dead.
“In consultation with the Pottawattamie County Attorney’s Office, it was determined that [redacted] would be charged with motor vehicle homicide by OWI and motor vehicle homicide by reckless driving,” officials said in a prepared statement Tuesday.
Police say the teen was taken into custody Tuesday morning, and then released to her mother until her first court appearance.
The crash happened around 10:20 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 4, on Interstate 80, near mile marker 4.
A second 16-year-old passenger in the vehicle was treated at a nearby hospital for minor injuries.
