An Omaha driver is accused of going 140 mph on Interstate 680 Tuesday morning.

The Nebraska State Patrol says 21-year-old Jared Gooden was booked into jail after the patrol’s airplane recorded his speed at 140 mph while going north on I-680 in a blue Pontiac GTO.

“This individual had complete disregard for the safety of others on the road around him. We are fortunate his reckless actions didn’t cause an accident and take someone’s life,” said Cpt. Brenda Konfrst.

Troopers say they tried to stop Gooden near the Irvington Exit, but he fled by driving through the median to head south on the interstate.

The airplane kept tabs on Gooden as until he stopped at a home near 48th Avenue and W Street.  That’s when troopers were able to take him into custody.

Gooden faces charges of speeding, willful reckless driving, driving under suspension, flight to avoid arrest and no registration or insurance.
