LINCOLN, Neb. (KMTV) — The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) said two state penitentiary staff members were seriously injured by an inmate on Tuesday morning.
Shortly after 9 a.m., an incident started in one of the yards involving multiple groups of men fighting.
According to NDCS, staff members deployed chemical agents to break up the altercations. Two inmates received lacerations, believed to be from homemade weapons.
The inmates' injuries weren't serious and both men were treated by medical staff and escorted back into the facility.
NDCS said one inmate slipped out of restraints and punched a nearby staff member in the head multiple times. The same inmate additionally assaulted a second staff member who arrived to assist, officials said.
Both injured staff members were treated at a local hospital.
Two housing units are on modified operations while the investigation continues to identify all of the inmates involved in the fights, along with the assaults on both staff members.
Results of the investigation will be given to the county attorney to determine criminal prosecution.
