Metropolitan Utilities District crews are staying busy responding to reports of water main breaks. They responded to more than a dozen water main breaks over the holiday weekend and more than 700 emergency calls for no water.
Extra field crews and dispatch workers were called in to help with the increase in call volumes.
Plumbers have also been staying busy with frozen and split pipes.
Some tips to protect your pipes are to open sink cupboard doors to allow warm air to circulate, leave the heat on if you go out of town, maintain heat in crawl spaces and basements, cover exposed pipes with heat tape, and keep a small stream of water running.
Those with water-related emergencies are advised to call 402-554-7777.
