COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (KMTV) — Just days before the Iowa Democratic caucus, the other side of the political aisle is beginning to give their election pitch. Vice President Mike Pence says he came to Council Bluffs for one reason on Thursday - to help re-elect President Donald Trump.

"He's never stopped fighting for you Iowa and now it's our turn to fight for him," says Pence.

Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds introduced Pence to a room full of veterans at the Gathering Room.

Those vets seemed fully on board with re-electing Trump, who Pence says has made sweeping reforms to the Veterans Affairs department in his three years in office.

"Veterans benefits are not entitlements, they are earned and ongoing compensation that you earned in the uniform of the United States of America,” says Pence.

At least one vet in the building says that's exactly what he wanted to hear.

"Supporting veterans, hospitals in need, people coming back from war and stuff, they need care throughout their life that we've forgotten," says Neil Gabala, a Trump supporter at the rally.

Pence also took note to takedown Democrats, specifically those in Congress that impeached Trump and are looking to remove him after the Senate trial.

"They're trying to impeach this president because they know they can't defeat this President Donald Trump,” says Pence.

That largely includes the Democrats running for president, who all have swung by Council Bluffs in the last month or so.

Pence labeled them socialists.

"Higher taxes, open borders, late term abortion, and actually their leading candidates openly advocate policies that have impoverished millions around the world,” says Pence.

Those in the crowd shouted USA and appeared to back Pence and Trump.

"Steadfast, more conservative, they make a good match together" says John Turack, a Trump supporter at the rally.

"He is solidly on the team and if they send him to a task he takes care of business," says Don Lynn, a Trump supporter at the rally.
