OMAHA, Neb. (KMTV) - A woman who left her baby on the front porch of a home in South Omaha will spend time behind bars.
Maria Piaz-Perez, 28, was found guilty of abandonment of a child.
Prosecutors say the investigation found she gave birth not long before leaving the baby on a porch near 15th and U Street.
Her defense attorney said Perez is from Guatemala and was not aware of the Safe Haven Law which allows parents to leave an infant at a hospital within the first 30 days of birth without facing charges.
She was sentenced to 90 days in jail and given credit for time served. The baby was found safe and is okay.
