MILWAUKEE -- A Milwaukee police officer injured in a shooting on the city's northwest side has died, police have confirmed.

The shooting happened just after 5:00 p.m. Wednesday. Sources said a woman called police on her son, who was wanted on drug and gun violations, police say. The man later opened fire at the officer.

"This is a very fluid investigation, things are ongoing," Police Chief Alfonso Morales said at a news conference.

The officer was a 17-year veteran of the force.

A large crowd formed at the scene as neighbors tried to see the crime scene for themselves. Officers were forced to back up the crowd using crime tape several times.
