Louisiana Congressman Steve Scalise is in the fight for his life still while his beloved LSU Tiger baseball team gets ready for their biggest games of the year at the College World Series.
Thursday, the LSU Tigers made it into Omaha and are practicing at the Creighton University baseball field. Scalise was shot Wednesday morning while practicing for today's congressional baseball game.
LSU has sent hats for all representatives playing in the game to wear on behalf of Congressman Scalise. Head Coach Paul Mainieri said he has been a long-time friend of LSU athletics and baseball.
"Our hearts are broken for he and his family," Coach Mainieri explained. "I can tell you I’ve been in deep prayer hoping and praying for his recovery. I know he’s not out of the woods it’s going to be a long road to recovery. We’ve made him kind of our honorary coach for the College World Series and I’m really looking forward to seeing him when he’s up and around.”
Scalise was wounded in the hip by a single rifle shot. He is in critical condition with internal injuries and broken bones.
LSU will play Florida State on Saturday at 7pm at TD Ameritrade Park.
