BREAKING: Watson bails out of jail

Former Creighton basketball star Maurice Watson, Jr is now out of the Douglas County jail.

Watson has been locked up since turning himself in Sunday on a sexual assault charge.  A judge set his bond at $750,000, and Friday afternoon he was able to post the $75,000 needed to get out of jail. Watson left the jail on crutches and got into what's believed to be his attorney's car which then drove away from the facility.

Investigators say a 19-year-old woman says Watson had nonconsensual sex with her at a home near 33rd and Poppleton on February 4th.  He was then suspended from the basketball team on February 13th for actions contrary to university policies and core values.

Watson's family had been trying to raise money for his bail and legal costs. They had even set up a crowdfunding site online until it was shut down a couple of days ago. His attorneys had asked a judge to allow him to return home to Philadelphia to continue his rehab following knee surgery. The judge declined, so Watson will have to remain in Omaha.

Watson returns to court for a preliminary hearing on March 27th.
