Nebraska football head coach Mike Riley updated injuries, talked about the bye week and previewed the upcoming matchup with Purdue during his Monday morning press conference.
One of the biggest injury updates of the presser was the announcement that Tre Bryant would have surgery Tuesday. Riley said that Bryant would be a great applicant for a medical redshirt and could gain another year of eligibility if granted.
Riley said all three safeties will be ready to get back to practice this week, but he is unsure of the status of linebacker Luke Gifford and Dedrick Young. Gifford has been bothered by a hip injury, Young has been dealing with his wrist.
Riley noted that the team is obviously not where it wants to be at this point in the season, but commends his older players for helping to keep the team together.
He said that linebacker Chris Weber has been one of the most consistent players on the field for the Huskers this season.
Riley also talked about his recruiting over the bye week, and talked about the possibility of recruiting a quarterback. He said the staff's original thought was to wait until 2019 to grab a QB, but Riley said there are a couple of QB's he looked at this weekend and could change his outlook.
He noted the changing of the defense to a 3-4 and changing the offensive scheme from Tommy Armstrong Jr. to Tanner Lee are more like "year one" changes, but wouldn't call it a setback.
