Quinn's Corner: Jacobson transfer too familiar

Sophomore the fourth Husker to elect to transfer
Posted

Here we go again, Husker hoops fans.

In a tale that's become all too familiar, late Monday afternoon reports started to surface that sophomore Michael Jacobson had elected to transfer from Nebraska.

By the early evening, the news was confirmed by the university.

The statement was cordial - exactly what you would expect. Discussions were had. Coaches were thanked. Players were thanked for hard work. Players were supported. Blah, blah, blah.

If you read between the lines a bit, it sounds like Jacobson's role and future position played into his decision. Per Miles statement, "...Michael and I have had numerous discussions regarding his role and what position he would be playing for us in the future."

Ultimately, at this point, does it really matter why Jacobson decided to leave? He's the second starter in two weeks to decide to abandon ship. If one or two more guys decide to call it quits, what kind of team is Nebraska going to be able to field next year?

I'm sure he has good reasons for wanting to relocate, and this isn't intended to be a criticism of the player.

It all boils down to one, simple question: Why does Nebraska have so much trouble retaining players?

I understand that guys transfer all over college hoops, but it's usually not to this level. This goes beyond a guy or two that aren't happy with their roles. Over the past two off-seasons, Nebraska has lost too many significant pieces.

The the next logical question that's asked might be the most pertinent - is this it? Are there going to be more?

According to Lee Barfknecht of Omaha World Herald, who spoke to Miles Monday night, the program doesn't expect any additional transfers at this point.

But, they've been surprised before. Let's hope they're not again.

Lost in the shuffle of the Jacobson transfer news and the hype surrounding spring football in Lincoln, it was a tremendous weekend for a couple of the local college baseball teams.

Nebraska capped off an impressive two week stretch by taking the series against Maryland, a team that's expected to challenge for the Big Ten title.

1B/DH Ben Miller had a huge week at the plate, netting 12 hits, 6 RBI, and 5 runs scored. Considering he was batting .150 not too long ago, its safe to say the slump is over.

Perhaps even more impressive that Nebraska's two week run was Creighton's bounce back series win over #14 St. Johns. After getting blasted by Nebraska during the week, the Jays got incredible pitching performances from all of their starters in the 2-1 series win, that could have easily been a sweep after an extra innings loss on Friday.

Both teams seem to be headed in the right direction at the moment.
